Tree Risk Management for Alvaston Hall — Nantwich, Cheshire

THE CHALLENGE:

Alvaston Hall is a historic country house hotel set in extensive grounds near Nantwich in Cheshire, managed as a Warner Hotels leisure resort. The hotel's grounds contain a substantial population of mature and veteran trees in a designed parkland landscape — including significant specimens close to the hotel buildings, car parks, and guest areas where the consequences of a tree failure would be severe.

Warner Hotels required a comprehensive, professionally documented tree risk management programme for the grounds that would demonstrate their duty of care to guests and staff and provide a defensible audit trail of inspection, assessment, and recommended action.

OUR ROLE:

Urban Tree Management carried out a complete tree inventory and risk assessment across the Alvaston Hall grounds using digital tree management software and GPS survey equipment. All trees were visually assessed using the Visual Tree Assessment methodology, condition and risk-rated, and all findings recorded to produce a georeferenced tree inventory and risk management report for the estate. Where trees showed signs of potential internal defects requiring further investigation, specialist decay detection using sonic tomography and Resistograph resistance drilling was deployed to provide objective internal condition data before management recommendations were finalised.

A full tree risk management plan was produced setting out recommended works, priorities, and future inspection frequencies for all trees across the grounds.

THE OUTCOME:

Warner Hotels received a complete, defensible tree risk management programme for the Alvaston Hall grounds — providing clear evidence of their duty of care management, a prioritised works schedule for their grounds team, and a georeferenced tree inventory that supports long-term estate management planning.
