Tree Condition Surveys for BUPA Care Homes — Multi-Site Programme

THE CHALLENGE:

BUPA, one of the UK's largest private healthcare and care home operators, required tree condition surveys across a number of care home sites in the North West — each presenting a particularly important duty of care context given the vulnerability of the residents and the volume of visitor and staff access. BUPA needed a professionally structured survey programme that would provide a consistent, defensible record of tree condition across all sites, identify any trees requiring management intervention, and produce outputs suitable for their national estates management and governance systems.

OUR ROLE:

Urban Tree Management carried out tree condition surveys across the BUPA care home portfolio, assessing all trees at each site using the Visual Tree Assessment methodology. All findings were recorded using GPS-enabled digital survey software, producing georeferenced tree location plans, condition ratings, and management recommendations for every tree at every site. Outputs were produced in a consistent format across the full portfolio — compatible with BUPA's national estates management system — and a prioritised works schedule was produced for each site identifying all trees requiring management intervention and the recommended timescale for each action.

THE OUTCOME:

BUPA received a complete, professionally documented tree condition survey dataset covering their North West care home portfolio — providing the defensible evidence of duty of care management required for their national governance and insurance frameworks, a prioritised works schedule for their estates management contractors, and a consistent baseline dataset for future inspection cycles. This project reflects Urban Tree Management's experience in delivering tree survey programmes within the specific duty of care requirements of the healthcare and care home sector.
