Tree Risk Assessment for Ambleside Park Hotel — Lake District

THE CHALLENGE:

Ambleside Park Hotel in the Lake District — set in mature woodland grounds on the edge of Lake Windermere — required a professional tree risk assessment covering the hotel's extensive grounds and woodland. The hotel's grounds contain a substantial population of mature trees in a particularly sensitive landscape setting — the Lake District National Park — where any tree management works require careful consideration of the landscape, ecological, and heritage context.

The hotel required a risk assessment that would satisfy their duty of care to guests and staff, provide a defensible audit trail of inspection and assessment, and produce management recommendations proportionate to both the risk profile of the trees and the sensitive National Park landscape setting.

OUR ROLE:

Urban Tree Management carried out a tree risk assessment across the hotel grounds and woodland, assessing all trees using the Visual Tree Assessment methodology and risk-rating in the context of the targets present — guest areas, paths, car parks, and the hotel buildings. All findings were recorded using GPS-enabled digital survey software, producing a georeferenced tree location plan for the full grounds, condition and risk ratings for every tree, and a prioritised works schedule identifying all trees requiring management intervention.

Management recommendations were produced with full regard for the National Park landscape setting — prioritising retention and targeted management over removal wherever the structural evidence allowed, and specifying works in a manner consistent with the National Park Authority's tree management policies.

THE OUTCOME:

Ambleside Park Hotel received a complete, professionally documented tree risk assessment for their grounds and woodland — providing defensible evidence that their duty of care to guests and staff was being actively and professionally managed, a prioritised works schedule proportionate to both the risk profile of the trees and the sensitive National Park landscape context, and a record of inspection and assessment suitable for their insurers and the Lake District National Park Authority.

This project demonstrates Urban Tree Management's capability to deliver tree risk assessments in National Park and other sensitive landscape settings where the balance between public safety and landscape conservation requires the highest level of professional arboricultural judgement.
