Summary:
We were commissioned to investigate three mature trees identified by the head gardener for further assessment. Using advanced diagnostic techniques, including sonic tomography, resistance drilling, and fungal identification, we were able to pinpoint areas of internal decay and evaluate each tree’s structural integrity.
- T001 – Beech: Partial stem dysfunction confirmed, with Armillaria spp. present. Recommended ongoing monitoring and repeat tomography within 24 months.
- T002 – Beech: Advanced decay detected, with Meripilus giganteus, Armillaria spp., and Kretzschmaria deusta present. Classified as an unacceptable risk under QTRA. Recommended removal within 3 months and replanting with a suitable species.
- T003 – Oak: Early-stage weakening and fungal presence (Pholiota aurivella) noted. No significant loss of geometry at present. Recommended scheduled monitoring and repeat tomography within 36 months.
All works and recommendations were made in line with BS 3998:2010 – Recommendations for Tree Work.
Our comprehensive reporting and proportionate management advice ensured that the client could make informed decisions about tree safety, balancing site usage with long-term sustainability. The project demonstrates our ability to combine technical evidence, risk modelling, and practical recommendations to manage tree risk responsibly.
