Tree Decay Detection with Sonic Tomography — Cheshire
THE CHALLENGE:
A private homeowner in Cheshire had a large, mature tree in their garden that had begun showing signs of concern — areas of unusual response growth on the stem, some bark loss, and a history of branch failures in the crown. A previous visual inspection had suggested the possibility of internal decay but had been unable to confirm its extent or structural significance from external examination alone. The homeowner needed objective, measurable evidence of the tree's internal condition before a proportionate management decision could be made — particularly given the tree's proximity to the property and its significant amenity value in the garden.
OUR ROLE:
Urban Tree Management carried out a specialist decay detection investigation using the Arbotom sonic tomography system — the most advanced non-invasive tool available for assessing internal tree condition. Sensors were placed at regular intervals around the full circumference of the stem and the system generated a detailed two-dimensional tomographic image of the internal condition of the wood at the assessment height, clearly mapping the location, shape, and approximate extent of any internal decay or hollow within the stem.
The tomographic findings were then confirmed and refined using IML Resistograph resistance drilling — a minimally invasive technique that measures the resistance encountered as a fine needle is driven through the wood, producing a resistance profile across the full diameter of the stem that directly confirmed the presence and depth of the decay identified in the tomogram. The combined data from both instruments was analysed and a full written report produced, incorporating the tomographic images, the resistance profiles, the surveyor's interpretation of the findings, and a clear management recommendation proportionate to the structural condition identified.
THE OUTCOME:
The investigation provided the homeowner with objective, independently reproducible evidence of the tree's internal condition — confirming the presence and extent of internal decay and allowing a precise, proportionate management recommendation to be made. The homeowner received a comprehensive written report that documented all findings clearly and in plain English, gave them a clear picture of the options available, and provided defensible evidence that the condition of the tree had been professionally assessed before any management decision was taken.
The tree was retained with targeted management rather than removed — an outcome that the objective diagnostic data made possible by demonstrating that the remaining sound wood was sufficient to support a monitored retention strategy.

Work With Us
Urban Tree Management provides specialist tree diagnostics and TPO support across Cheshire, helping clients make informed decisions about mature, high‑value and protected trees. Cheshire’s landscape is rich in large garden specimens, estate trees and long‑established avenues, and when these trees begin to show signs of decay or structural decline, a standard inspection often isn’t enough.
That’s where our advanced diagnostic services come in. Using sonic tomography, resistograph micro‑drilling and QTRA risk analysis, we deliver clear, evidence‑based assessments that local authorities recognise and trust.
We work throughout Chester, Warrington, Northwich, Knutsford, Wilmslow, Macclesfield, Crewe, Nantwich and the wider Cheshire countryside, supporting homeowners, rural estates, land agents and commercial sites. Whether you need a detailed decay investigation, a second opinion on a protected tree, or a fully prepared TPO submission, we provide a precise, professional service tailored to the unique character of Cheshire’s treescape.
